The month of April is dedicated to helping dog owners prepare for emergency situations. To celebrate National Pet First-Aid Awareness Month in April, pet owners are urged to be prepared to handle emergency situations, such as a car accident or poisoning.
1. Be Prepared
To help pet owners prepare in advance, Dr. Mark Stickney, director of general surgery services at Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, offers the following tips.
The American Red Cross has some recommendations on how to prepare to protect your pets in the event of a disaster. If you must evacuate, the most important thing you can do to protect your pets is to evacuate them, too. So prepare now for the day when you and your pets may have to leave your home. The Red Cross recommends the following.
2. First-Aid Kit
The American Red Cross advises pet owners to keep the following first-aid supplies on hand: gauze pads, gauze roll/bandages, roll of cloth, thermometer, tweezers, hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic ointment, Q-tips, instant cold pack, rags/rubber tubing for tourniquet, and first-aid book.
Denise Fleck (the founder of Sunny-Dog Ink, a site dedicated to promoting pet care education) specializes in teaching pet first-aid and CPR. She teaches her own classes and has developed a 60-piece pet first-aid kit.

3. Add Your Pets to Your Will
Have you ever thought about what would happen to your pets if you were no longer around to take care of them. An increasing number of pet owners are including their pets in their wills to provide for them long-term.
